Loss

The installation Loss explores the memory of two family members whom I never had the chance to know. They were stillborn, and although I have no personal memories of them, their absence and their stories remain part of my family’s memory.
The 300 × 300 cm installation was made from 60 metres of paper, which I burned on site over the course of a week. The ash produced by the burning and the lingering smell of smoke became physical traces of the loss. The work creates a space for remembrance, giving form to an absence and to a relationship that never had the chance to exist.
