Buso

The painting Busó emerged from an interest in the busó mask as an object and in the shift of identity it enables. The work draws on the form of an early busó mask found in Hungary.
The mask conceals the wearer’s face and personal identity while allowing them to take on another role. The person behind it recedes into the background, making space for a figure capable of behaving outside the rules of everyday life. The work explores the space between the familiar and the unfamiliar, and between personal identity and an assumed role.
