One of Many

One of Many presents a single corn plant, removed from its original collective setting and placed alone in space. In the repetitive order of agricultural fields, corn rarely appears as an individual form; the sculpture transforms this familiar structure into a reflection on the position of the individual.
The work explores the relationship between belonging to a community and individual identity. Communities influence how we behave, what we value, and how we see ourselves, while standing apart can make our own position less certain. The sculpture deliberately leaves open whether being alone is a choice or a form of exclusion.
The combination of carved wood and hand-shaped steel evokes both the organic form of the plant and an artificially constructed, ordered structure. The solitary corn plant still carries traces of the environment from which it emerged, while asserting a presence of its own.
